Merchants use service, in-store technology to tackle showrooming

A recent study, by Seattle-based group Placed, found 40% of the shoppers participated in showrooming and concluded the threat to retailers may be more serious than they realize. The study was based on survey results from nearly 15,000 people. Retailers are boosting personal service levels and boasting new in-store technology in an effort to combat the growing threat of showrooming, including Walmar’s Endless Aisle, which encourages shoppers to scan product codes in the store to order them from the retailer’s website. “If you get to the heart of it, retailers don’t care how or where people shop — as long as it’s with them,” said Vicki Cantrell, Shop.org’s executive director.
